Crashes are costly and contribute to around half of work-related deaths. But they’re a preventable problem!

USE ISO 39001:2012 IN YOUR OH&S PROGRAM AND REAP THE BENEFITS

Today, road traffic injuries are the 9th leading cause of death across all age groups. It’s even more alarming that young people (15 to 29 years of age) are most often the victims of road accident injuries and deaths. Our unsafe transport system is striking out hard at our youngest and brightest, at great cost to businesses, families and the broader economy.

Fortunately, death and serious injury in road traffic crashes is a preventable problem and the solution lies in our hands! As organisations, we are heavily reliant on the roads to transport our goods and services. As such, we have a responsibility to not only the future success of our own businesses but to the communities, we work within to address this serious safety risk.

REDUCING ROAD ACCIDENTS IS A GLOBAL HEALTH PRIORITY

Due to Road Safety being a significant obstacle to meeting the Global Sustainability Goals, the United Nations (UN) has placed Road Traffic Safety high up on the agenda and it is now specifically mentioned in a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For instance, in SDG 3 “Good health and well-being” the target has been set at halving the number of global deaths and injuries from road accidents by 2030.

The UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) has developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. One of the 5 pillars of the plan is to build Road Safety Management capacity and using ISO 39001:2012 serves this purpose perfectly. Interestingly, South Africa is a member of the Global ISO/TC 241 Technical Committee and participated in developing the ISO 39001:2012 Road Traffic Safety Management Systems Standard.

WHY SHOULD I USE ISO 39001:2012?

ISO 39001:2012 ensures that your organisation’s Road Traffic Safety matters are handled in a structured way, to support a corporate culture of quality, safety and continual improvement

Safety Management Systems like ISO 45001:2018 are widely used to limit exposure to safety risks. But how to manage and improve road safety is less evident in the Occupational Health and Safety Standard.

ISO 39001:2012 fills this important gap in your Safety Management Program and offers the latest globally agreed to requirements for managing this risk in the workplace and on the roads.

ISO 39001:2012 can be used by organisations of all types and sizes, and integrated with the general management system in your organisation and with several ISO Management Systems Standards such as ISO 9001:2015 (Quality) and ISO 14001:2015 (Environment) and ISO 45001:2015 (OH&S).

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS IF I USE ISO 39001:2012?

Injuries in road traffic crashes contribute to around 50% of work-related deaths on public roads. These road safety outcomes are costly but preventable with good practice Road Safety Management.

ISO 39001:2012 is designed to help your organisation reduce, and ultimately eliminate, the incidence and risk of death and serious injury related to road traffic crashes. Implementing the standard will assist you with:

  • Planning and preventing avoidable death and serious injury.
  • Reducing the number of workdays lost to injury.
  • Reducing insurance premiums and vehicle repair costs.
  • Increasing your competitive advantage in tendering processes.
  • Improving the image of your organisation and increasing business.
  • Demonstrating your commitment to an issue of significant public concern and commitment to achieving the Global Sustainability Goals.

THE ROAD MAP TO IMPLEMENTING ISO 39001:2012

In broad terms, an organisation wanting to develop an RTS Management System would go through the following steps:

Step STEP 1 - SCOPE & CONTEXT

The standard requires that an organisation commits to eventually eliminating death and serious injury resulting from road traffic crashes, and it allows the organisation to determine the scope of the management system that it puts in place

STEP 2 - LEADERSHIP COMMITMENT

Establish leadership commitment by adopting a long-term vision to eliminate death and serious injury, and by providing resources to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve the RTS Management System towards these ends.

STEP 3 - PLANNING

Determine risks and opportunities through assessment of current performance and identify the RTS performance factors that are relevant. Set objectives and targets for factor and develop action plans.

STEP 4 - IMPLEMENTATION

Implement and operate the RTS Management System, and ensure that sufficient capacity is provided for the objectives and targets to be met.

STEP 5 - MONITORING & EVALUATION

Monitor and evaluate RTS performance, conduct internal audits and periodic reviews of the RTS Management System to identify opportunities for continual improvement.

STEP 6 - CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT

Improve the RTS Management System on a continual basis, following review of RTS performance and of the RTS Management System itself.

ISO 39001:2012 is being adopted across the world, and organisations report a range of positive benefits from adopting the standard. Are you ready to improve your OH&S performance in a hugely unique way and save on costs?

ISO 39001:2012 IN SOUTH AFRICA

Back in 2013, Risk ZA encouraged the South African market place to adopt the then-new Road Traffic Safety Standard and, as a result, brought the ISO 39001:2012 standard to South Africa. Our understanding of the significant risk that road traffic accidents pose to business continuity motivates us to find ways for others to simplify the adoption of this standard.

Work with us to build a Road Traffic Safety Management System that will help you to manage road traffic safety in a more efficient and cost-effective manner.
