Today, road traffic injuries are the 9th leading cause of death across all age groups. It’s even more alarming that young people (15 to 29 years of age) are most often the victims of road accident injuries and deaths. REDUCING ROAD ACCIDENTS IS A GLOBAL HEALTH PRIORITY
Due to Road Safety being a significant obstacle to meeting the Global Sustainability Goals, the United Nations (UN) has placed Road Traffic Safety high up on the agenda and it is now specifically mentioned in a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
For instance, in SDG 3 “Good health and well-being” the target has been set at halving the number of global deaths and injuries from road accidents by 2030.
The UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) has developed a Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. One of the 5 pillars of the plan is to build Road Safety Management capacity and using ISO 39001:2012 serves this purpose perfectly. Interestingly, South Africa is a member of the Global ISO/TC 241 Technical Committee and participated in developing the ISO 39001:2012 Road Traffic Safety Management Systems Standard.

THE ROAD MAP TO IMPLEMENTING ISO 39001:2012
In broad terms, an organisation wanting to develop an RTS Management System would go through the following steps:
Step STEP 1 - SCOPE & CONTEXT
The standard requires that an organisation commits to eventually eliminating death and serious injury resulting from road traffic crashes, and it allows the organisation to determine the scope of the management system that it puts in place
STEP 2 - LEADERSHIP COMMITMENT
Establish leadership commitment by adopting a long-term vision to eliminate death and serious injury, and by providing resources to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve the RTS Management System towards these ends.
STEP 3 - PLANNING
Determine risks and opportunities through assessment of current performance and identify the RTS performance factors that are relevant. Set objectives and targets for factor and develop action plans.
STEP 4 - IMPLEMENTATION
Implement and operate the RTS Management System, and ensure that sufficient capacity is provided for the objectives and targets to be met.
STEP 5 - MONITORING & EVALUATION
Monitor and evaluate RTS performance, conduct internal audits and periodic reviews of the RTS Management System to identify opportunities for continual improvement.
STEP 6 - CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT
Improve the RTS Management System on a continual basis, following review of RTS performance and of the RTS Management System itself.
